PJWrght:
"I don't criticise koric because I disagree with him, but because of the words he chose, and the public manner in which he chose to use them."
Couldn't that be read as saying, 'You shouldn't be allowed to say things like that or in that way'?
And if that's so... Isn't that censorship?
I don't
think so. I know I have the title "Moderator" under my name, which makes me nervous sometimes about posting, but I hope members don't attribute some sort of "my word is law" authority to
everything I write. For the record, where I'm acting as a Moderator I say so explicitly, and at other times I speak only as a fellow forum member. So I
hope I'm not veering into "not allowed" territory.
There's a cycle on the Fictionmania forum that drives me absolutely nuts. (By my calculation, we're due for a re-occurrence any day now.) The initiation of the cycle usually follows an author objecting to an unflattering review and takes the basic form of someone else chiming in with a snarled, 'How dare you [the original, unflattering reviewer] be so ungrateful as to offer anything but praise and gratitude for the authors who donate their wonderful stories? Shame on you! Authors; pay no attention to these hairy barbarians!'
I couldn't agree more with your view that there is room for honest negative comment on stories, artwork etc. posted here or on Fictionmania. I believe, however, that even criticism can be expressed politely, and that there is a difference between critical feedback and simple abuse. There is also something to be said for the Management 101 principle:
"Praise publicly; criticise privately", where that option is available.
