Heh, as a poster from that era known as The Siren Song, I can appreciate the differences from back then and now (Really now, five centuries? We're not THAT old... yet). But the hubbub is I think more about the venom behind the original poster's topic title. It is fine to dislike something, but advocating such censorship because YOU don't like it seems a bit selfish to me.

I've been through a lot of InfinitySign's work, which I do enjoy. While I might have wanted more vampire in this story (Honestly? The supernatural here could easily have been just called a body hopper or a demon or some such. I don't even recall seeing fangs on the vampire in question), it still did what it was aimed at. It doesn't come as a surprise to me that sexuality is involved in much of InfinitySign's work, it is in fact, a very common element of his stories that he explores. Whether to titilate or prove something about the destruction of willpower and by that virtue, the erosion of the ego into a baser more instinctual id, that is up to InfinitySign, not you or I.

Though, when you get onto this site, there is one rule that stands out to me: You are voluntarily choosing to access this Web Site, because you want to view the various Adult Materials that are available. You agree to immediately exit from this Web Site if you are in any way offended by the sexual nature of any Adult Material. I think this speaks for itself.

PJWrght:
"I don't criticise koric because I disagree with him, but because of the words he chose, and the public manner in which he chose to use them."
Couldn't that be read as saying, 'You shouldn't be allowed to say things like that or in that way'?
And if that's so... Isn't that censorship?

I don't think so. I know I have the title "Moderator" under my name, which makes me nervous sometimes about posting, but I hope members don't attribute some sort of "my word is law" authority to everything I write. For the record, where I'm acting as a Moderator I say so explicitly, and at other times I speak only as a fellow forum member. So I hope I'm not veering into "not allowed" territory.

There's a cycle on the Fictionmania forum that drives me absolutely nuts. (By my calculation, we're due for a re-occurrence any day now.) The initiation of the cycle usually follows an author objecting to an unflattering review and takes the basic form of someone else chiming in with a snarled, 'How dare you [the original, unflattering reviewer] be so ungrateful as to offer anything but praise and gratitude for the authors who donate their wonderful stories? Shame on you! Authors; pay no attention to these hairy barbarians!'

I couldn't agree more with your view that there is room for honest negative comment on stories, artwork etc. posted here or on Fictionmania. I believe, however, that even criticism can be expressed politely, and that there is a difference between critical feedback and simple abuse. There is also something to be said for the Management 101 principle: "Praise publicly; criticise privately", where that option is available.

Andi,

I have an admittedly very thin skin when it comes to the issue of censorship. It's almost knee-jerk with me. As a result, I react (over-react?) at the first hint of suspicion. "You shouldn't be allowed to say things like that or in that way" is going to get the little hairs on the back of my neck bristling every time. I can't help it.

But let me make this clear at least: I didn't intend to accuse you (or anyone else on this thread) of actually engaging in censorship. At most, I balked at the idea that some of the comments made were tending in a direction that I -personally, given my biases- found troublesome.

On the other hand, I whole-heartedly and without reservation agree that negative comments can and should be expressed with civility - if for no other reason than civility usually gets more concrete result than insult. On a related note; I think that a comment that is negative without also being constructive isn't worth the time it takes to read.

I do agree there should be more variation with regards to the content of the stories. However, I feel that some of the story-driven comics are somewhat boring. Not that I'm trying to say that I hate a good story, but most of the longer running comics suffer from a severe lack of proper pacing.
